Here at Travelling Whale we are all about exploring the world sustainably. It can be a daunting and sometimes overwhelming task to plan such trips, and even know where to begin. Luckily for you, we’ve compiled our Top Sustainable Destinations across the globe to inspire your next trip and we’re here to help you plan it!
There are many ways to make your trip more sustainable, whether it be the form of transportation you take, the food you eat or choosing eco-accommodation options. Simple swaps can help to reduce your carbon footprint whilst still having an incredible adventure.
THE ISLE OF EIGG, SCOTLAND
It’s no secret that travelling by air is one of the most significant factors impacting an individuals carbon footprint, so why not explore the hidden treasures of your home turf?
The Scottish Hebridean Isle of Eigg is seven miles off the west coast of Scotland and only accessible by land. Cars are prohibited, so it’s easy to keep that footprint nice and low before you’ve even arrived, by taking the train. The sleeper train from London to Fort William sets the pace for the rest of your trip, embracing the slow tempo of island life. With only 10,000 visitors a year, you can trust that your stay will be quiet, and off the beaten track.
The Isle of Eigg is leading the sustainable race for the planet in several ways. Named as Britain’s most eco-friendly island, the island locals (known as Eiggers) boast that the island runs on 95% renewable energy, another reason why we couldn’t keep it off our Top Sustainable Destinations list! The island is also community-owned, and with a population of just under 100 people, the locals have taken fighting climate change into their own hands.
Nature thrives on Eigg, and although the weather in Scotland can be a bit temperamental (to say the least!), the scenery will never disappoint. Come rain or shine the views are always second to none, with the Isle of Mull and Skye in the distance. You should also be able to spot eagles whilst strolling along the beach, and even whales or dolphins if you’re lucky. With not a street light in sight, starry nights compete with some of the best in the world. Potential glimpses of the Northern Lights are up for grabs depending what time of year you visit.

EL CHALTEN, ARGENTINA
Visit ‘the heart’ of Patagonia – El Chalten for the best nature has to offer and some of the most renowned hiking trips in South America. El Chalten is a small village that lies within Los Glaciares National Park (on the Argentinian side of Patagonia). The park itself was named a ‘World Heritage Site of Humanity’ by UNESCO’ in 1981, and the views do not disappoint. Although national park entry fees may be steep, they contribute to the conservation and preservation of the area, which is what attracts tourism which, in turn, supports the local economy. So even if you are on a tight budget, do your bit and pay up!
Hiking is the main activity here, so if you love scenic views and fresh air, then this one is for you! It is not particularly easy to get to, but once you’ve made it, you are quite literally in the gateway to Patagonia and some of the most amazing views in the world.
Natural beauty is what entices travellers to El Chalten, which means sustainability is at the top of everyone’s priorities when planning day trips and excursions. The motto you will hear most when chatting to fellow travellers is ‘leave no trace’. To protect the awe-inspiring beauty of the surrounding habitats of the large variety of wildlife and epic scenery, you will want to put this into practice. So take your rubbish with you, even natural food waste can upset the surroundings. So when you would normally throw an apple core into a bush, take it home with you instead and dispose of it correctly.
Camping is pretty much the only option for sleeping when you’re hiking, but when it’s in a natural wonder of the world, that’s the best way to go – be prepared to see millions of stars and sunsets that you will never forget and that will fill your camera roll.
COPENHAGEN, DENMARK
Top Sustainable Destinations across the globe don’t all have to involve the great outdoors. If the cosmopolitan vibrancy of a city is more your thing then head to Copenhagen-Denmark’s green capital. As an eco trailblazer, praised as one of the top sustainable destinations in Europe. The cosmopolitan city has pledged to become carbon neutral by 2025, so you can enjoy urban living in a city that is truly making a difference.
Council investment in bike lanes make cycling the best way to get around, or if you need to give your legs a break, don’t worry, all buses have been made electric throughout the city so you can travel around guilt-free. The city is also adapting to the effects of climate change; several neighbourhoods now have raised pavements to adapt to rising sea levels, ensuring Copenhagen will still be somewhere worth visiting in the years to come.
Does the idea of swimming in the sludge of your capital city’s river make you shiver in disgust? Us too. But despite being a busy city, you can swim in Copenhagen’s harbour without being worried about what might be lying underneath the surface. The water is crystal clear, which not only shows how eco the city is but also makes it perfect for a quick dip in the height of Summer (or Winter if you’re feeling brave). If chilling out by the water is your thing, we also recommend hiring a GoBoat. The solar-powered boats are a great way to spend a warm evening with a chilled drink and good company. The boats allow you to enjoy your surroundings without damaging them.
So there you have it! A quick rundown of our Top Sustainable Destinations in the world. We know it can be challenging planning a trip that is sustainable and has a low environmental impact, but here at Travelling Whale we want to help.
