CYCLING AROUND GREECE
This week’s Travelling Story features Ken, where he explains why cycling around Greece was his top holiday destination and highlights why cycling independently round the ancient country made him feel alive!
What is your favourite country and why?
Cycling around Greece independently- we never knew where we would end up sleeping at night!
What was the main highlight of the trip?
Running round the ancient Olympic track, it was a fantastic experience.
Tell us a fun story or something funny that happened whilst you were there?
We were lost in narrow roads and ended up showing our map to two men on a tractor. They held it upside down and the wrong way round, we didn’t think they had ever seen a map before so we pressed on.
Where did you stay and would you recommend it?
We stayed in many hotels around Greece and we also camped. One that was memorable was in Kalavrita a village in the Peloponnese. We arrived at dusk with nowhere to stay but found a large winter sports hotel, Helmos Hotel, which was closed for the summer. The caretaker took pity on us and allowed us to stay in one of the rooms. What we did not know until the morning was that he arrived by car at 9 am to let us out as we had been locked in overnight.
Your favourite dish whilst travelling?
The grand evening meal was an apple each and a muesli bar which was our emergency rations. However our favourite dish was a Greek salad on a very hot day in the shade looking at the very blue sea.
TRAVEL INSPIRATION
Describe how travelling makes you feel in 3 words?
Just feeling alive!
What excites you about travelling and where do you want to travel to next?
The adventure and discovery of new places and people. Travelling this year should be a train journey to Prague, Vienna and Berlin in June but this will undoubtedly be next year now.
SUSTAINABLE TRAVEL
Would you consider yourself a responsible traveller?
Yes
Any top tips on how you can travel more sustainably?
Research and planning, take minimum luggage (if we can live for six weeks out of bicycle panniers anybody can)
