OUR TOP 5
SUSTAINABLE HOTELS
IN THE UK

We have chosen our 5 favourite sustainable hotels in the UK and explained why you should seriously consider booking a stay!

The Scarlet Hotel, Cornwall

With amazing views over the beach, The Scarlet boasts an incredible 111 different ways in which it is a sustainable hotel. You can find the full list here.

The three that impressed us the most were:

  • A staff shuttle service runs from Newquay and showers are available or those who walk or cycle into work.
  • The freshwater pool uses a living reed as its filtering system to replace the need for harsh polluting chemicals.
  • Local St.Ives natural soaps, shampoos and lotions are in large refillable bottles in the rooms and any soap bars that are left get recycled as stain rubs for the laundry.

Looking for somewhere to stay in the capital, then look no further! This floating concrete structure was transported from Amsterdam in 2016 to its new home on the water of London Docklands; their mission is “combining doing business with doing good and quality”.

In the hotel, you will find beautiful hand made wooden furnishings that have been made locally from repurposed materials. They also save energy by using renewable energy sources; however, most importantly, the true stand out is its people. The hotel offers training and jobs to long-term unemployed people in the local community in the prospect of a better future.

Daylesford Organic Farm, Gloucestershire

A family run 2,500-acre Gloucestershire farm is one of the most sustainable farms in the UK. The perfect countryside retreat for the eco-conscious they have a range of places to stay from the cosy Egg Store Cottage that sleeps 2, to The Wood Store (the original Daylesford Farm House) that sleeps 6 – perfect for a family getaway.

Above all, the farm works hard to provide the highest environmental standards including responsible food sourcing, a zero food waste commitment and since 2009 have been committed to decreasing their carbon emissions year on year with a pledge to be 75% energy self-sufficient by the end of 2020.

The Pig, New Forest

The Pig Hotel brand is a well known and highly sought after branch of hotels in the UK but did you know that they had sustainable cabin options in their New Forest location?

As a result, the Forest Hut and Bert’s Box accommodation is the first of its kind that focuses entirely on an environmentally friendly design option that contains everything you need for a two-person hideaway weekend.

But, most importantly, their company runs an Apprenticeship Scheme designed to help young people get into hospitality and develop them into the chefs and hoteliers.

The Green House, Bournemouth

If the name isn’t an instant giveaway; this hotel is renowned for being the greenest hotel in the UK! Green House boasts over 100 different ways it lives and breathes sustainability.

For example, here are the following three that inspired us the most:

  • Locally-brewed beer and spirits are in the restaurant, and the wine list is carefully selected to take into account their carbon footprint.
  • All 32 rooms include a super comfortable bespoke eco bed made by a leading UK luxury bed manufacturer.
  • Energy from the sun helps to heat the water as well as generating electricity through a combined heat and power unit, which also helps keep the hotel nice and warm all year round.
